Final Thoughts
Cloud computing will change the way our daily lives are run in the way that the internet changed our lives. Never before will so many people have access to the world wide web. Web 2.0 will definite be affected in a big way as the impoverished and ill equipped business individuals will now have access to thousands of resources for nearly free costs. Thinking back to how twitter has changed protests, I can foresee an entire body of individuals all going towards the same common goal when the need arises. Small businesses now have the chance just like any other big business and a low affluent neighborhood just has as much success as any other. I can't wait to see the statistics change for the better. I am no longer interested in seeing that poverty has the largest effect on a child's educational future. The world has changed for the better and this is only the start.

What are your thoughts on cloud computing?

  1. James,

I really appreciate how you explained the benefits of cloud computing in terms of efficiency and cost. I never took the time to think about how many outdated computer systems could be replaced for cheaper, newer, and faster systems that do not need to use any storage space on a school network. There have been several times this year where teachers have been asked to clear out their "My Documents" folder because our school's shared drive was too full. If schools could implement cloud storage the way some businesses do, then education really could be impacted by this emerging trend. I hope that you have suggested your ideas for cloud computing at your school before they keep the same systems in place and spend what seems to be an unnecessary amount of money on technology. I have worked at schools where teachers and administrators have made attempts to share documents via Google Drive or Google Calendar, but it was difficult to get everyone on board. Many teachers are still in the mindset of preferring e-mail attachments over shared cloud documents.

On a side note, I had to laugh when you mentioned Reddit, because that is the one site my husband seems to constantly be on. I imagine that it's so easy to get "lost" browsing and reading threads on Reddit because users are constantly adding comments and even more links. Although I sometimes see this site as a time-waster, it's not any different that my use of Pinterest. I didn't take the time to think of both of these apps as a type of cloud computing, but now it makes more sense that all of those threads and pins are just an ever-growing mass of ideas that users worldwide are sending to a cloud somewhere out there in Internet space.

    1. Thanks for reading!

The benefits are incredible but are being overlooked because IT individuals are afraid to take a risk. Doing something other than massive storage space ran side by side with servers is the go to it seems, but it creates a ton of wasted energy and physical space. Renting out your services to the cloud (individuals don't need to, but a school or institution would need to use more usage) is the go to for many innovative places like University of Delaware.

Reddit is a great web 2.0 site as well as just a huuuuuge time waster :) It still gives me the news however and that is better than most TV outlets.

  2. James,
Your blog is extremely comprehensive. I feel like I already knew a lot about cloud computing but all of your information, especially geared towards the hardware/software necessary. I use cloud computing every single day. I have two personal computers in addition to the many that I will use during a school day. It is not practical/near impossible to bring a flash drive along to store my documents, especially with how forgetful I can be!
I am passing my love of cloud computing along to my students. Rather than create word documents, powerpoints, etc. we do all these things on Google Drive. This way no matter which computer they get next time they use it, they are able to access their files. They are also able to access their files at home if they need to complete an assignment or if they wish to show off their work to their parents. While this is only part of cloud computing, you have to start somewhere!

    1. I brought an external harddrive with me to work my first couple years. I would always forget it as well! One time I went paddleboarding in the middle of winter and saw my bookbag getting robbed as I was out in the water. All of my school documents were on that external harddrive; I wish I had the cloud then!

I think it is great that you are doing your class assignments on drive. Students always have such a time trying to find their particular file folder on the public drive and it creates such a waste of transition time. In the future I'll take your word for it and use drive. Thanks for reading!

  3. Nice blog! Cloud computing is a great tool to use for student collaboration. Cloud computing creates a space for students to work on projects together with out the hassle of finding a place to meet with everyone's busy schedule. Cloud computing allows teachers to create class notes that they can send out to their students before class so the students can pay attention to the lecture rather than worrying about taking notes.

Cloud computing helps me out because I store all of my class materials on my Google drive and I dont have to worry about bringing my storage devices with more and forgetting them in the classroom computer.

Cloud computing is going to replace CD's and external hard drives in the very near future. This will be better to back computer files like pictures, music, and documents. With cloud's you dont have to worry about storage hardware failing and loosing those important files.

    1. Absolutely. The only thing I worry about now is the government looking into all of our data! After a while, citizens will start placing nearly all of their documents into the cloud which will most likely be accessed from a government official or two :) I'm not being paranoid or anything, but it is something that america needs to think about when eventually everything will be stored in the cloud.

As for me, I store stuff in the cloud now, but I can also go to walmart and buy a 3 TB harddrive for under $100, which can hold everything I've ever needed honestly. I'll most likely convert to home use for storing my files, but leave cloud computing for all the horsepower I need later :)
